What are Red Pandas?

Red pandas are mammals found in eastern Himalayas and southwestern China that are a similar size to your average pet cat, but are covered in thick, shaggy ginger fur. These are acrobatic and skilled animals, and have been receiving much recognition from people from across social media, which is good for their declining population.

How did Red Pandas get their name?

Although the origin of the name “panda” is a controversial topic, it comes from the Nepali words “Nigalya Ponya”, which is translated to “ Bamboo-footed” in English! Not as simple as you thought the name was, right?

Fun Facts!

  1. Red Pandas are carnivores! Not your average panda, right?

  2. They spend ⅔ of their day sleeping!

  3. Red Pandas' white markings seem luminescent in the dark!

  4. Red Pandas stand on their hind legs as a defense mechanism!

  5. Red Pandas hibernate, unlike regular giant pandas.

Why are Red Pandas endangered?

Red Pandas are slowly dying due to habitat loss, human interference, and illegal poaching. Based on this information, clearly these magnificent fluffy creatures are being affected by us, and we need to stop it. So far, the red panda population has decreased 40% over the past 2 decades. Now, less than 10,000 of these animals are left in the world. It won’t be long until the name of this species is nothing but a memory.

Why are Red Pandas worth saving?

Other than being a cute internet sensation, red pandas help balance their delicate and beautiful forest ecosystem, as well as provide food for their natural predators, who also are critically endangered. Not only that, they assist in keeping bamboo growth in check, which, if left alone, would overtake other plants and become an invasive species.

How can you help?

You can help by spreading more awareness about red pandas, either on social media, or just to your friends! Supporting red panda fundraisers and donations help conservationists take action and gradually help increase the red panda population! The red panda is more than just a name, but a species who desperately needs your help.
